After National Youth Service in Rivers State, he held teaching appointments in Niger State, including Women Teachers College, Gulu; Government Army Day Secondary School, Minna Barracks; and Women Teachers College, Garatu.
He taught courses including Business Communication, Public Relations and Advertising, Television Production, and Radio Broadcast Organisation, alongside examination and student-coordination responsibilities.
His responsibilities included Information and Publications, General Administration in the Vice-Chancellor's Office, Establishments, committee service and senior university administration.
He served as Acting Registrar during a period of senior administrative responsibility at the university.
He subsequently served as Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
He joined the Department of Mass Communication as a Senior Lecturer, first on sabbatical and later on contract.
From 2021 to 2026, he served as Federal Commissioner representing Niger State at the National Population Commission.
Following the conclusion of the then Chairman's tenure on 28 October 2025, the Commission announced that Muhammad Usman Dattijo would lead the NPC in an acting capacity pending the assumption of the new substantive Chairman. He formally handed over to Dr. Aminu Yusuf in December 2025.

His service included Chairman of the Niger State Chapter (1995–1999), National Vice-President (2003–2005), and later fellowship of the Institute.
His professional affiliations include the Association of Communication Educators, Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators, Institute of Corporate Administration, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and Nigerian Institute of Management.
He served as President of the Bayero University Kano Alumni Association from 2013 to 2017.
